Hörzu was a German-speaking hip-hop music group from Krefeld that was active between 1992 and 1998.

history

The group was formed in 1992 through the merger of the hip-hop formations “Flowmatics” and “3D-Posse”, both of whom had written German-language texts from 1990 onwards, and some of them self-produced and some of them rapped on instrumental records and published on underground tapes. The "Flowmatics" were already part of the Innovative Music Corporation (IMC) founded by the Mönchengladbach-based hip-hop producer KMS , for which Hörzu also made exclusive tape contributions.

In 1993, Hörzu financed and produced the mini-LP “Gestammelte Werke” in an edition limited to 500 copies. 200 records were sold on the Move Records label . After this inventory was sold within two months, Move Records and Hörzu decided to bring out the second release "Ritter der Schwafelrunde" in 1995 under the Move label. The maxi release “This is a party” followed on the same label in collaboration with the Austrian hip-hop group Total Chaos . In the same year the maxi-CD “ Bayer 05 Uerdingen ” was released, shortly afterwards reissued as “ KFC Uerdingen ” for “ Sat 1-Ran! The soccer hits 2 ”sampler.

Hörzu shot a video clip for both albums, "Krefeld am Rhein" and "This is a party". Hörzu appeared in discos, at hip-hop jams and city festivals and accompanied Total Chaos on a tour of Austria. In a game against Bayern Munich in the sold-out Grotenburg Stadium , they played “Bayer Uerdingen” in front of 33,000 football fans.

With “Ritter der Schwafelrunde” there were also joint projects with befriended hip-hop bands, namely H4P , Tatwaffe (both “Mach dich weg”) and Total Chaos (“Lauf”), the latter also remixed the maxi release “This is one Party".

Due to a change of residence and a change in lifestyle, Hörzu decided in 1998 to break up the group and gave one last concert in their hometown of Krefeld. Since then, rapper Robin S has made a few contributions to the IMC tapes. Most recently he appeared on the Michelmann & DJ Hypa Aktiv album "Back to Deutsch Bass" (2013) and on the DJ Hypa Aktiv album "Cutze aus dem Sack EP" (2015).

style

In the mid-1990s, there was a trend in the German rap scene towards multi-culturalism and “ old school ” topics, from which Hörzu consciously distanced himself and turned to other classic rap topics. In most of the songs the band presents itself and its environment (“Krefeld”, “This is a party”, “Wir ham den Lenz”), partly as battle rap (“Funk im Tank”, “Sound of the new language” "), Partly in narrative form (" Get in "). All songs were produced by KMS and Hörzu. The focus is on 2- or 4-bar loops , which are sparingly varied and underlaid with sampled drum breaks to bring rap to the fore. But there are also pieces with melodic hooks (“spring time”). Many double rhymes , metaphors and punchlines have appeared in the raps since 1993 , which is now appreciated by those in the know.

Controversy

In 1994 Robin S and Funky Philipp recorded a battle rap for the intro of IMC Tape 2. The background was that (from their point of view) at that time, even within the German hip-hop scene, technically unexperienced rappers got the attention and there was hardly any understanding for talented rappers who worked with modern rap techniques. They named Absolute Beginner , CUS , Crak from No Remorze and David Pe from Main Concept , among others ; they generally criticized trends at the time such as "old school", Britcore- rap and rock crossover . On the other hand, Hörzu gave examples of the rappers they thought deserved more attention ( Lars Doppel-L , Raid, Tatwaffe, Walkin 'Large ). In the hip-hop scene, where battle raps were not common at the time, the song, although only released on tape, made waves and earned Hörzu the reputation of a diss band . Absolute beginners answered on their album “Bambule” with the line “otherwise there's a failure like in Krefeld am Rhein”.
