The HMAS Collins (SSG 73) is the lead ship of the Collins class .
The submarine bears the name of the Australian Vice Admiral John Collins . Collins commanded several Allied warships and task forces during World War II . He was Commander in Chief of the Royal Australian Navy from 1948 to 1955.
The first assemblies were manufactured in Sweden from 1989 . The parts built in Sweden included the bow and the nave in particular. The boat was built in Osborne near Adelaide . When it was launched in 1993, the ship was christened by the admiral's widow.
The Collins was not originally equipped with sound-absorbing tiles. The modern construction was retrofitted later. The other five buildings in the class have the tiles as standard.
The HMAS Collins is the only boat in its class that has the ability to transport amphibious special forces and land or pick them up again.
