HMS Britomart was a British 10-gun brig (ten-gun brig or brig sloop ) of the Cherokee class . The ship was used in the fight against the slave trade and as a research ship. It wassoldin Singapore on April 13, 1843and from then on served as a pilgrimage ship to Mecca . A headland near Auckland in New Zealand was named Point Britomart after the ship.

Fight against the Atlantic slave trade

On October 17, 1835, Lieutenant William Henry Quin succeeded in boarding the Spanish schooner Conde de los Andes near Fernando Póo with 282 slaves on board and arresting the captain Bartolomé Pedemonté. A month later he raised the Thereza , which was sailing under the Portuguese flag. Their captain Silveiro Joze Pereira Coutto had taken 214 slaves on board in Lagos . In 1836 the Spanish slave ships Mosca , Dos Hermanos (alias Numero Dos ) and General Mina fell into the hands of the Britomart .
