The Cherokee- class is a series of English briggs . The Beagle belonging to the series has become particularly well known through Charles Darwin's travels .

The 1807 Cherokee class English flat-deck brig

The English Cherokee- class 10-gun flat-deck briggs are one of a series of designs by brig sloops and briggs that appeared towards the end of the American Revolutionary War and thereafter. The number of ships in this class increased steadily. The individual ships took on many of the tasks of the larger sloops . At the end of the Napoleonic War , the vast majority of smaller warships - like the Cherokee class at first - had brig rigging . The Cherokee class embodied the smallest brig type drawn by Henry Peake. As such, he was not classified in one of six British ship classes and was thus added from a Commander commanded.

The first series of thirty-four ships of this type was ordered from private British shipyards between 1807 and 1808 during wartime. Seventy-eight further sister ships of the second and third series were ordered from the Royal Shipyards after the Napoleonic Wars, the second between 1812 and 1818, the third between 1823 and 1826. From the order of the British Admiralty for the sale of the remaining operational units of March 19, 1853 a possible indication of the end of active service of the Cherokee- class in the Royal Navy emerged.

The first series 1807 and 1808

Of the ships of the first series, the Prince Arthur was sold to Morocco in December 1808 , five more, namely the Achates , Wild Bear , Ephira , Sarpedon and Rhodian , were lost between 1810 and 1813. Two further ships of the first series were ordered in teak wood from the Royal Shipyard in Bombay in 1812. The Sphinx was launched on January 25, 1815, the Cameleon on January 16, 1816. They therefore fall into the second series (see below).

Before the end of the coalition wars between 1807 and 1808, the following ships were ordered:

The Rinaldo , Redpole , and Goldfinch have been converted into package ships.

The second series 1812 and 1818

After the Napoleonic War, the Peake design saw a revival. The later ships were made around 42 cm shorter and 5 cm wider based on a modified drawing on the waterline. The planned water displacement fell to 231 tn.l.

The crew was set to:

  • 52 men in peacetime,
  • 33 men as a parcel brig ,
  • 50 men as a brigantine .

Orders for Cherokee- class flat-deck brigs after the Napoleonic War were all placed with Royal State Shipyards. These were: Chatham Dockyard , Deptford Dockyard, Portsmouth Dockyard, Pembroke Dockyard, Plymouth Dockyard , Sheerness Dockyard and Woolwich Dockyard

Note: Some ship names of the Cherokee class appear for the second time within the ship class and are marked with (2.) if they were ordered as a replacement for a ship that has already been lost or abandoned. The ships Forester and Griffon were initially ordered, but then canceled and re-ordered in a different version. These appear within the order series marked with (1.), but were not initially built.
