The HMS Britomart was a British 10-gun brig (ten-gun brig or brig sloop ) of the Cherokee class . In 1810 she captured the L'Intrépide (8 cannons, 40 crew members) and on July 17, 1812, together with the HMS Leveret and the HMS Osprey, the L'Eole (6 cannons, 31 crew members) off Heligoland . In August 1816, the Britomart took part in the bombing of Algiers .
On February 3, 1819, the HMS Britomart was sold to G. Bailey and was used in passenger shipping. It operated between England and Australia under the name Britomart . In December 1839 the ship was wrecked en route from Melbourne to Hobart . As a result, it became known that objects from the ship were in the possession of the local population on the Bass Strait Islands , including the ship's log and the compass. There were rumors of pirates , escaped convicts or renegade Aborigines had deliberately led the ship to a reef using will-o'-the-wisps in order to kill and rob the crew. It has even been claimed that a white woman fell into the hands of Aborigines in Gippsland , but the search for her was in vain.
