HMS Drake

HMS Drake is the name of ships in the Royal Navy . They are named after the British circumnavigator Sir Francis Drake or after the mythical creature dragon .

So far there have been nineteen ships with this name:

  • The first Drake was a 16-gun ship launched in 1653 and sold in 1691.
  • The second Drake was a 24-gun sixth rank , launched in 1694 and lost in an accident that same year.
  • The third Drake was a yacht and carried two guns. The ship was launched in 1705, completely renovated in 1727 and sold in 1749.
  • The fourth Drake was a 14-gun sloop that was launched in 1705, totally renewed in 1729 and demolished in 1740.
  • The fifth Drake was a 14-gun sloop that was launched in 1736, converted into a mortar ship in 1758 , and sold in 1755.
  • The sixth Drake was a 14-gun sloop that was launched in 1740 and crashed in 1742. The wreck was sold in 1748.
  • The seventh Drake was a 14-gun sloop launched in 1743 and sold in 1748.
  • The eighth Drake was a 12-gun sloop that was launched as the civilian coal ship Marquis of Granby , was purchased in 1770 and was briefly called Drake . In 1771 it was renamed Resolution and served James Cook on his second and third voyages to the Pacific. In 1782 she was captured by the French ship Sphinx .
  • The ninth Drake was a 20-gun sloop that was launched as a civil resolution and was purchased in 1777. It was captured in 1778 by the American sloop USS Ranger under John Paul Jones .
  • The tenth HMS Drake was a 14-gun brig that was launched in 1779, mainly used in the Caribbean and was canceled in 1800.
  • The eleventh HMS Drake was a 14-gun brig that was launched as the French privateer Tigre . She was captured by the former French frigate HMS Melpomene in 1798 and had an accident in 1804.
  • The twelfth HMS Drake was a 16-gun sloop that was launched in 1799 for the British East India Company as the civil mail ship Earl of Mornington . It was bought in 1804 and demolished in 1808.
  • The thirteenth HMS Drake was a 10-gun Cherokee- class brig that was launched in 1808 and crashed in 1822.
  • The fourteenth HMS Drake was a shipyard light converted into a mortar ship in 1854 and launched in 1834. In 1855 it was renamed MV 1 , then to HMS Sheppey and in 1856 it was converted back into a lighter, which was demolished in 1867.
  • The fifteenth HMS Drake was a gunboat of the clown class , which was launched in 1856 and was sold. 1859
  • The sixteenth HMS Drake was a boat that was bought in 1870 and was previously called YC 1 . The cutter was built in 1793 as HMS Hart ; it was canceled in 1875.
  • The seventeenth HMS Drake was a Forester- class screw gunboat of composite construction, launched in 1875 as HMS Sheldrake and renamed HMS Drake in 1888 when she became a training ship . In 1893 it was renamed WV 29 and finally sold as HMS Drake in 1906 .
  • The eighteenth HMS Drake was an armored cruiser of the Drake class , which in 1901 was launched and was sunk by a submarine 1917th
  • The nineteenth HMS Drake was the HMS Marshal Ney monitor of the class of the same name launched in 1915, which was renamed HMS Vivid in 1922 , HMS Drake in 1934 and HMS Alaunia II in 1947 . It was canceled in 1957.
