HP Zimmer (actually Hans Peter Zimmer ; born October 23, 1936 in Berlin ; † September 5, 1992 in Soltau ) was a German painter and sculptor .

Life

Zimmer was introduced to art early on by his uncle, the collector Otto Ralfs . In 1956 and 1957 he studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts with Professor Kranz and Professor Johannes Itten and then went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1957 to 1960) to study with Erich Glette .

In 1958 he founded the artist group SPUR with the painters Helmut Sturm and Heimrad Prem and the sculptor Lothar Fischer in Munich . In 1958 the first SPUR manifesto and the SPUR graphic portfolio were published with 12 etchings by the artists and texts by Asger Jorn, Hans Platschek and Conrad Westphal. From 1959 to 1962, the SPUR group was a member of the “Situationist International”, a cultural-political movement of architects, filmmakers, artists and writers.

The group published the SPUR book in 1962, in which the SPUR magazines No. 1 to 7 are printed. Joint projects between the SPUR group and the Munich artist group “Wir” followed. This was followed by an amalgamation under the name "Geflecht", which, however, dissolved again in 1968 with the beginning student movements. In 1963, Zimmer was involved in three joint projects in a row: the SPUR building for the Paris Biennale, the “Canal Grande Crescente” mural in Palazzo Grassi, Venice, and the painting of a country house near Munich.

Zimmer made the acquaintance of Enrico Baj, Jean Dubuffet, Emilio Vedova and Graham Sutherland while traveling through Italy. The artist withdrew from all groups in 1967. He didn't paint for a year.

Zimmer moved from Munich to Aschau im Chiemgau in 1973. In 1982 he was offered a professorship for painting at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig . Zimmer's autobiography was published in 1984 under the title "Self-talk". In 1986 he founded the Institute for Demonological Aesthetics in Braunschweig. Several works by Zimmer from the Otto van de Loo donation are exhibited in the Kunsthalle Emden .
