The aviadvigatel OAO (JSC) was the leading design office for civil and military aircraft engines in since 1939. Russia . In the meantime there were also gas turbines and power plants based on them .
From its foundation in 1939 to 1953, Arkady Dmitrijewitsch Schwezow , who developed radial engines for aircraft from Polikarpow , Tupolew , Sukhoi , Lavochkin , Ilyushin , Antonow and helicopters from Mil and Jakowlew , was in charge of the company.
In the early 1950s, the new head, Pawel Alexandrowitsch Solowjow , began developing jet engines . Among other things, he developed the first Russian turbofan engine and headed the company for over 35 years until 1989.
Yuri Reshetnikov and his successor Alexander Inozemzew led the company through the times of systemic change and into the form of the open joint stock company (OAO). During this time, the focus was expanded to include the development of industrial gas turbines for power plants or pumping stations.
The engines and power units were produced in two plants, the associated Perm Engine Company and Rybinsk Motors (now NPO Saturn ) in Rybinsk .
