The Habelberg is 718.5 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Rhön in Hesse ( Germany ).
Geographical location
The Habelberg lies between the main town Tann and the district Habel west of the Ulster . It is the highest point of the Soisberger Kuppenrhön .
Mountain description
It was created by the Rhön volcanism in the Tertiary . Here, the layers of red sandstone and the shell limestone layers on top of them were lifted by magma rising from the subsoil and finally penetrated, so that basaltic lava flowed out. The Habelstein , a steeply sloping basalt rock at an altitude of 681 m, testifies to this . The Habelberg is made accessible to tourists by the Kuppenrhön route , a variant of the Hochrhöner . On the wooded mountain, in addition to the Habelstein on the southwest side, there is also the hay field at 600 m above sea level on the northwest side of the mountain as designated lookout points.
history
On its west side there is a 300 m long section of a Celtic ring wall that was probably never completed . The on the late Latènezeit dated "sword from Habel mountain" is so far the only datable Fund. The sword with a decorated scabbard is exhibited in the Vonderau Museum in Fulda.
