Habibullah Ghaleb

Habibullah Ghaleb (* 1939 in Kohistan , Kapisa ) is an Afghan politician of Pashtun descent. He studied law in Afghanistan and Egypt and held various positions in the Afghan Ministry of Justice. Ghaleb spent several years in exile in Pakistan and the United States . In January 2010 he became Minister of Justice in Hamid Karzai's cabinet .

Life

He graduated from Kabul University in 1962 , received his bachelor's degree in 1964 and then worked in the Afghan Ministry of Justice. In 1967 he went to Egypt for two years at al-Azhar University in Cairo . He received his Masters in Comparative Islamic Law and published his dissertation entitled "Lawfulness of Crime and Punishment". He then worked again in the Afghan Ministry of Justice until the beginning of the Soviet intervention in 1978, during which he was imprisoned. After he was released two years later, he emigrated to Pakistan.

From 1994 to 1995 he served as Afghan Deputy Attorney General. He spent several years in the United States during the rule of the Taliban .

In 2006 the Wolesi Jirga rejected him as the 9th judge at the Afghan Supreme Court (88 votes for him, 88 votes against him with three abstentions).

On January 9, 2010 he was appointed Minister of Justice by Hamid Karzai. In June 2012 he caused an international stir because he equated women's shelters with brothels . EU Foreign Affairs Representative Catherine Ashton was " deeply concerned " about the remarks.
