The port of New Orleans (own name Port Nola ) is a seaport in New Orleans ( Louisiana , USA ). Together with the Port of South Louisiana , it is administered by the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans .

location

The port is located roughly in the middle of New Orleans , around 160 km from the mouth of the Mississippi into the Gulf of Mexico (Atlantic Ocean).

history

Since the first Europeans gained a foothold in the port of New Orleans in 1718, this area has been often fought over, not least during the Civil War when New Orleans was the capital of the southern states. The port was also very important for the slave trade with Africa and the shipping of the goods obtained, e.g. E.g .: gold, diamonds, silver, coal etc. to Europe.

present

Today the port is one of the most modern and important ports in the United States , as it controls the export of food around the world. By Hurricane Katrina of the port and its exports were hit very hard, some were only 40% of the goods are sent. However, the port was rebuilt very quickly and exports could be regulated again. Around 84 million tons of goods are now shipped every year. Based on this number, the port of New Orleans is the fifth largest port in the United States. An average of 1,800 seagoing ships dock here every year.

In a ten-year period before or around the turn of the millennium, USD 400 million was invested in the port to improve its future viability. The focus was on expanding container loading and the transport infrastructure.

Goods and transport

The port is the only deep-water port in the United States served by six railroad companies.

The port is very important for steel exports and the largest for rubber in the US. It is the second largest port for importing coffee after the port of New York. Around 700,000 passengers board the port of New Orleans every year. More goods are exported to Latin America through the port than any other port in the United States.

It is also very important for traffic on the Mississippi, as all cruise ships depart from New Orleans, including those going to the Caribbean, Mexico, or the Bahamas.
