Haffensche Landwehr-Sonsfeldsche Weiden has been a nature reserve of almost 160 hectares in the city of Rees in the Haffen district since 2010 .

The area is located east of Rees and includes various excavation waters in different stages of development, the adjacent grassland area "Sonsfeldsche Weiden" and the Haffensche Landwehr, a moat that connects the Reeser Altrhein with the Hagener Meer and has an important networking character. The bank area is overgrown with wood and with its species-rich water and bank vegetation it offers a habitat for rare fish and large mussel species.

The wet meadows of the grassland are criss-crossed by numerous shallow ditches and in winter they are used as feeding grounds by arctic wild geese such as white-fronted and bean goose .

The Reeser Meer Nord is the oldest excavation water and an important resting and breeding place for ducks and geese. Common terns breed on the nesting aids in the biotope lake to the east . The youngest excavation water is the Reeser Meer Süd with z. Part of the bank areas still lacking vegetation. Flat sandy areas and headlands have emerged from the graveling work. B. Little ringed plover and lapwing provide food. In addition to different species of ducks and geese, river , bank and even black tern can be observed here.

The beaver has also settled in the area of ​​the Reeser Meer excavation complex .
