The Aspeler-Schmales Meer nature reserve is located in the city of Rees in the Kleve district in North Rhine-Westphalia , has been a protected area since 2010 and covers an area of ​​23 hectares.

In particular, it serves to protect and preserve two scenically significant backwaters as well as a biotope complex of backwaters, structurally rich grassland and old park-like trees. The development goal is the creation of a near-natural still water through the creation of shallow water zones and the development of extensively used (wet) grassland.

The area extends near the village of Haldern and belongs to the outside area of Haus Aspel .

The designation as a nature reserve takes place in particular:

  • to protect and preserve two scenically significant backwaters in the edge area of ​​the floodplain south of the B 8 at the Groin / Aspel level, which are worthy of protection for special vegetation, dendrological , limnological , zoological, scenic and cultural-historical reasons,
  • to protect and preserve a biotope complex of oxbow lakes, structurally rich grassland, old park-like trees with a high structural diversity and the function of a networking biotope ,
  • for the preservation and restoration of a favorable conservation status of the natural habitats for water birds, cave breeders, dragonflies and breeding birds / guest birds.
