Hai-Ye Ni

Hai-Ye Ni (* 1972 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese cellist and music teacher.

Ni took his first cello lessons from her mother, then attended the Shanghai Conservatory and studied with Irene Sharp at the San Francisco Conservatory , Joel Krosnick at the Juilliard School and with William Pleeth in London. She received first prize at the International Paulo Cello Competition in 1996 and an Avery Fisher Career Scholarship in 2001 . In 1997 she played the world premiere of Bright Sheng's Cello Concerto on a fortnightly tour of the United States, representing Yo-Yo Ma .

From 1999 she was deputy principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra . With the Philadelphia Orchestra , whose principal cellist she has been since 2006, she made her debut as a soloist in 2010 with Camille Saint-Saëns ' First Cello Concerto. Among other things, she played Tan Duns Concerto for Cello, Video and Orchestra The Map at Expo 2010 and, under the direction of Donald Runnicles, in the 2015-16 season she played Johannes Brahms ' Double Concerto with violinist David Kim . She has also performed as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach , the Symphony Orchestras of Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver, Shanghai and Singapore, the Finnish Radio Orchestra, the Orchester National de France and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra .

At a solo recital in Carnegie Hall in 2004 , she played works by composers Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Chen Yi ; In 2009 she performed there with Lang Lang in the program Ancient Paths, Modern Voices: A Festival Celebrating Chinese Culture . She has given recitals as a chamber musician at the Kennedy Center , the Smithsonian Institute , Alice Tully Hall and the Wallace Collection , has participated in the festivals of Ravinia, Marlboro, Santa Fe, Aspen, Spoleto and Kuhmo and has worked with musicians such as Jeffrey Kahane , Jean -Yves Thibaudet , Yefim Bronfman , Joshua Bell , Gil Shaham , Cho-Liang Lin and Leonidas Kavakos together.

Her debut CD, released in 1998 by Naxos , was named CD of the week by Classic FM London. With the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eschenbach she recorded Dmitri Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony and his Seven Romances based on poems by Alexander Blok . On the CD Spirit of Chimes she played chamber music by Zhou Long with Cho-Liang Lin and Helen Huang . She gave master classes at the Curtis Institute of Music , the Mannes College of Music , the Manhattan School of Music , the Conservatory in Shanghai and the Central Conservatory in Beijing. She has been teaching at Rutgers University since 2018 .
