The aim was to develop the Negev desert with its potash and phosphate deposits . In 1989, the company was sold to a Trump Group holding company that is unrelated to US President Donald Trump .

Haifa Chemicals is part of the Haifa Group. This in turn has been owned by Trance Resource Inc. (TRI), a US holding company controlled by the Trump Group , since 1989 . As of 2010, the company had around 700 employees and had annual sales of USD 700 million with them.

The production facilities are located in Haifa Bay , North Negev and Lunel in France.

In Europe it has a branch in Mechelen, Belgium . "Haifa North West Europe" (Haifa-NWE) takes care of the distribution of the products in the Benelux countries.

Haifa Chemicals mainly manufactures fabrics for agriculture and industrial applications. In addition to Controlled Release Fertilizers So (CRF) Nutrient granules for agriculture, gardening (Horticulture), for the ornamental plants (ornamentals) and lawns produced.

Ammonia tank

Since plants can only absorb growth-promoting nitrogen in the form of ammonium and nitrate ions from the soil solution via the roots, ammonia is used for the production of artificial fertilizers on a large scale. In the port of Haifa, Haifa Chemicals operates a free-standing tank for 8,000 tons of ammonia (NH 3 ) . The tank is supplied monthly by sea. First in Haifa, and later in all of Israel, there was a great public controversy over the dangerousness of this tank. The Haifa-based Nobel laureate in chemistry, Dan Schechtman , pointed out that if the tank exploded, several thousand people in Israel's largest city would be at risk. Due to the fog that often prevails in Haifa, the ammonia would combine with the water droplets and have a particularly fatal effect.

The port of Haifa is only a few kilometers from the border with Lebanon . The Hezbollah declared the tank open the stop destination.

The Mayor of Haifa Yona Yahav is also campaigning for the tank to be decommissioned. A court in Haifa ruled in February 2017 that the tank should be emptied immediately.
