Hook [heɪken] is a British progressive metal - band from London , which was founded in the year of 2007.

history

The band was formed in 2007. The first concert followed in July of the same year, when she performed with the Polish prog band Riverside . This was followed by further appearances in London, with the band appearing as the opening act for King's X in Wolverhampton and Camden in January 2009. In October the band played with Bigelf on their tour of Great Britain .

The band reached a contract with Sensory Records and released the debut album Aquarius . The album was recorded in Germany in the Spacelab Studios by Christian "Moschus" Moos (Spacelab Studios) and also mastered in Germany in Eroc ’s Mastering Ranch. In May 2010 the band opened a concert for the Diablo Swing Orchestra . In the same year the band also performed at ProgPower Europe and then played a concert with Shadow Gallery in Maasbree on October 2nd . A gig with Karmakanic and Agents of Mercy followed on October 9th . On November 12th they performed together with Freak Kitchen . In April 2011 this was followed by an appearance together with Threshold and Vanden Plas as well as an appearance at ProgPower USA in September.

In 2011, the second album called Visions followed via Sensory Records . For the third album, which was released in 2013, the band signed a recording deal with InsideOut Music . On September 25, 2013, Haken announced the departure of bassist Tom MacLean from the band.

The 8-minute piece Cockroach King from her third album The Mountain , reminiscent of Queen , became her long-running hit, the whole album her international breakthrough.

In August 2019, the Deutschlandfunk series “Rock et cetera” broadcast a one-hour music journalistic portrait of the band. When asked for the name of the band, the front man found out that at the very beginning it was “Haaken”, sounding like a word from Norse mythology, but was then converted to “Haken” and has since been explained as “German for hook”.

style

The band plays technically demanding Progressive Metal, reminiscent of the works of Dream Theater and Pain of Salvation . Influences of classic 80s pop music as well as dubstep find their use on Affinity . The albums Vector and Virus see themselves as a double album, which is linked to the story of the "Cockroach King" ( The Mountain ) and thus creates a cross-band concept. Hook's music has gotten heavier and heavier since The Mountain was released and also developed in the direction of the Djent.
