Eroc (born November 15, 1951 in Weimar ; real name Joachim Heinz Ehrig ) is a German musician and music producer .
biography
Ehrig grew up in Oberhausen from 1954 and in Hagen (Westphalia) from 1961. Ehrig initially trained as a chemical laboratory assistant before turning entirely to music in 1970.
He began in 1966 as a drummer in the Hagen school band The Crew , which already included two members of his later formation, Grobschnitt. The crew disbanded in 1969. In 1971 he started his rock band Grobschnitt as one of two drummers , but was also always a sound engineer and sound tinkerer for the band. For the concerts, which were set up in show format, he developed short interludes and electronic effects. Since he has also mastered several instruments such as keyboard and guitar, he made his own music project out of it and recorded various pieces of his own in overdubbing (all instruments played himself). In 1975 his first solo album Eroc was released and the following year Eroc 2 , the first groundbreaking in early synthesizer music, the second as a "film for the ears" oriented more towards the fun and slapstick of coarse cut.
Eroc's best-known piece, the instrumental title Wolkenreise , was created in 1978 as background music to a drama by the band that opened the concerts at the time. After it was released in 1979 on the album Eroc 3 , the catchy, relaxed melody with accordion developed into a radio hit (32 weeks in the airplay charts). Wolkenreise was released as a single and reached number 32 in the German charts. It was the only single success from Eroc or Grobschnitt. Ehrig appealed against the CD publication of Eroc 3 by Metronome and Universal , but was defeated in 2002 before the Federal Court of Justice .
In 1982 Eroc 4 was released and in June 1983 Ehrig, who then preferred studio work to stage appearances, left the band Grobschnitt. In addition to his solo project, which brought out the fifth and final solo LP Changing Skies in 1987 , he switched to music production. In 1982 he was involved in founding Woodhouse Studios in Dortmund (later Hagen), where he successfully produced Phillip Boa and The Inchtabokatables, among others .
In the late 1990s he developed into a specialist in remastering, correcting and improving old recordings, for example from the Yardbirds , Hawkwind , Procol Harum or the Tornadoes. The complete works from Grobschnitt up to the dissolution in 1989 and his own works appeared from 2001 in versions that he had edited.
Joachim Ehrig is particularly connected to the experimental guitarist Hans Reichel from Wuppertal . As early as 1972 he produced his debut album Wichlinghauser Blues in his "home studio" in Hagen and since then numerous other albums. They also recorded music together, which led to the LP Kino in 1986 (Goldbroiler and Ehrlichmann). In 1997 a revised CD version with additional pieces was released under the title The Return of Onkel Boskopp . The eponymous track Onkel Boskopp is the original version, 1:40 min longer. In the LP version, Uncle Boskopp was shortened to 8:25 min and given a different ending in favor of the sound quality (neither side was much longer than 19 minutes) .
Eroc returned to the stage in 1998 and again in 1999 at the Eurosonic electronics festival in Sweden. This also resulted in the album Eurosonic Experiences together with Urs Fuchs and Stefan Wiesbrock, two musicians from the band Farfarello. In 2008 the best-of album Wolkenreise was released with numerous previously unreleased bonus tracks. In January 2010, Eroc was back on stage as a drummer for the first time in 27 years. At Kultopia in Hagen he played a few oldies from the 1960s with the band The Brothers (for which he also produced several albums) on the occasion of their 30th anniversary.
Instruments
During his time at Grobschnitt, Eroc played a Premier brand drum kit , later Pearl in a configuration with a bass drum , three hanging toms, a floor tom and snare .
