The School Sisters of the 3rd Order of St. Francis or Hallein School Sisters today Hallein Sisters Franciscan Sisters ( order abbreviation : HSF ) are a Roman Catholic women's order that began in Austria . The main task of the community is the education of girls . There are several branches of this congregation today.

history

In 1723, Theresia Zechner started looking after disadvantaged daughters of the salt works in Hallein near Salzburg . Together with some like-minded people she joined the Third Order of St. Francis and from then on was called Sister Hyacintha. In 1796, the Potschacherhaus in Hallein was purchased as the mother house, which today houses a home economics school. In 1823 the community received episcopal recognition. The small community today has certain problems with aging. It has a good 70 sisters in Austria and around 40 more in South America.

Branches of the congregation

By subordinating the branches to the respective local bishop, the community split into several separate congregations:

  • The Erdberger school sisters. in Vienna - Erdberg separated in 1845, they emerged from a branch which, at the suggestion of the Empress, looked after the daughters of the soldiers stationed there. Another convent is located in Seebenstein . From the 1930s on, sisters emigrated to Texas and Argentina , where they founded schools, old people's homes and a hospital.
  • The Amstetten school sisters. were founded in Vienna in 1853 and are now active in 10 branches in the diocese of St. Pölten . From 1855 to 1938, its parent company was Judenau near Tulln , and since 1938 it has been in Amstetten .
