Femke Halsema (born April 25, 1966 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch politician . From 2002 to 2010 she was group leader of GroenLinks in the Second Chamber . On July 12, 2018 she was appointed Mayor of Amsterdam .

Life

Halsema studied criminology and legal sociology in Utrecht . From 1993 to 1997 she worked at the Wiardi Beckman Foundation , the scientific institute of the PvdA .

In 1998 she was elected to the Dutch parliament for GroenLinks. During the first term of office of the Balkenende cabinet , she criticized the new legislation on foreigners as the legal policy spokeswoman for her group. Since November 2002 she acted as group leader. She temporarily resigned from this position in late 2003 when she became the mother of twins.

Halsema is considered to be left-liberal (even if she prefers to describe herself as "free-thinking"). This image was reinforced in 2005 with the publication of the Vrijheid eerlijk delen (“Honestly sharing freedom”) manifesto . In January 2006 she was proclaimed "Liberal of the Year" by the JOVD, the youth organization of the more right-wing liberal VVD .

In the Dutch parliamentary elections in 2006 , she was the top candidate of her party, as before in 2003. In the parliamentary elections on June 9, 2010 , she also topped GroenLinks' list of candidates. In this election the party managed to increase the number of parliamentary seats from 7 to 10; however, the government did not seek participation. On December 17, 2010, Halsema announced her retirement from politics and announced that she had resigned from the parliamentary group on December 16; Jolande Sap was elected her successor in this capacity on the same day . After the parliamentary Christmas break, she said goodbye to the Second Chamber on January 10, 2011.

In the run-up to the formation of the Rutte II cabinet after the parliamentary elections in September 2012 , Halsema von Lodewijk Asscher (PvdA) was brought into play as a possible minister, but this was rejected by the coalition partner VVD.

After she left politics, she worked as a journalist, temporarily held teaching positions at the Universities of Tilburg and Utrecht , was a member of several control bodies in the public and private sector and took part in various television productions .

She has been the mayor of Amsterdam since July 12, 2018 .
