history

Entrance to the cathedral
First international market at the summer cathedral 2014

The Hamburg Cathedral has its origins in the 11th century: traders and craftsmen, but also jugglers and quacks, looked for protection from wind and weather in what was then Hamburg's Mariendom at Speersort . Burchard Grelle , as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Bremen, also the canon of Hamburg, was bothered by this and so he banned the showmen from the house in 1334. Even the churchgoers resented this, however. Thereupon Archbishop Burchard explicitly allowed the presence of the traders in the cathedral in 1337, but only during " Hamburger Schietwetter ". And so the market stayed in the cathedral until the building was demolished in 1804.

After that, the traders and showmen moved without a fixed location by the Hamburg districts and distributed to the market places of the city: the goose market , the horse market , the Zeughausmarkt and finally the Großneumarkt . The market people were only given a new place in 1893: the Heiligengeistfeld , where the Hamburg Cathedral can still be found today.

The original winter cathedral (cathedral market) was joined by the summer cathedral (Hummelfest) after the Second World War in 1947 and the spring cathedral (spring festival) in 1948. With its three four-week events (spring, summer and winter), the Hamburg Cathedral is the largest folk festival in northern Germany and the longest folk festival in Germany.

At the Summer Dome 2014 there was for the first time an international market under the motto “Around the world in one day and the Summer Dome makes it possible”. In addition to local specialties and delicacies, an entertainment program is offered.
