Hamit Arslan (* 1894 in the Ottoman Empire ; † 20th century ) was a Turkish football player and Ottoman officer . Through his many years of work for Altay Izmir , he is very strongly associated with this club and viewed by club and fan sites as one of the most important personalities in the club's history. He was also the first Turkish international for the city of Izmir in general and Altays in particular. He was team captain for this club for many years.

Army career

After the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War , Arslan was drafted into military service. He fell into British captivity and was only allowed to return to his homeland after the war.

Since the Ottoman Empire was one of the losing powers, its capital, Istanbul, was occupied by British , French and Italian troops at the end of the First World War . As a result of the war situation, the subsequent occupation of Istanbul and the occupation of western Asia Minor by the Kingdom of Greece , more and more officers fled to Anatolia and joined the Turkish Liberation War led by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , including Hamit Arslan. Arslan, who was subordinate to Fahrettin Altay during this liberation war , is said to have proven himself in this war through great heroic deeds. As a Teğmen (German lieutenant ) he belonged to the Turkish troops who, under Ataturk's leadership, carried out the liberation of Izmir from the Greek occupation on September 9, 1922 .

Player career

society

The beginnings of Arslan's footballing career are almost undocumented. After the reconquest of Izmir in the course of the Turkish Liberation War , he played for Altay Izmir . With this club he took part in the İzmir Futbol Ligi (German Football League Izmir ), the regional football league of the western Turkish port city of Izmir . Since there was no national professional league in Turkey at the time , regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul , Ankara and Izmir, of which the İstanbul Futbol Ligi (also called İstanbul Ligi, German Istanbul Football League ) was or gradually became the most renowned newly founded. With his club he was able to win the first two championships of the 1924 Izmir League , those of the seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25 .

It is not known how long Arslan played for Altay.

National team

Arslan began his national team career in 1924 with a use for the Turkish national team in a friendly against the Finnish national team . With this commitment he went down in history as the first Turkish national player for the city of Izmir and his club Altay. By May 1925, he completed four more international matches.

In addition, Arslan took part with the Turkish selection at the Summer Olympics in 1924 , but was not used during this tournament.
