Han Jin-won (* 1983 or 1984 ) is a South Korean screenwriter and assistant director . He gained international fame as a co-screenwriter for Bong Joon-ho's multi-award-winning feature film Parasite (2019).

Life

Starts as an assistant director

Han Jin-won grew up with South Korean films and began to gain a foothold in the domestic film industry in the 2010s. As an assistant director, he was involved in the 2014 comedies Dad for Rent by Kim Deok-soo , Enemies In-Law by Kim Jin-young and Granny's Got Talent by Sin Han-sol, and the drama Daughter by Ku Hye-sun , all about the Family circle theme. Han also played a small extra role in Granny's Got Talent . In 2015 he assisted director Park Jeong-woo on the filming of his thriller drama Pandora .

Under Bong Joon-ho , Han was involved as a production assistant in his dystopian revolutionary epic Snowpiercer (2013). Another collaboration as assistant director followed during the shooting of the adventure film Okja (2017), which was produced by Netflix . The American-South Korean co-production, praised by the critics as a “naive, black-humored capitalism satire”, was represented in the competition at the 70th Cannes International Film Festival .

Success with "Parasite"

The international breakthrough for Han followed in 2019 with the script written together with Bong for his feature film Parasite , which was the first South Korean film to win the Palme d'Or at the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival . The story of the son of a poor family (portrayed by Choi Woo-shik ) who stole the job of a private tutor for a nouveau riche family and, over time, also found jobs for his relatives in the luxurious property, was a great success with the audience. Critics were also enthusiastic and praised Parasite as a sovereignly staged “genre hybrid of drama , farce and parable , which aims beyond the Korean standards at a fundamental critique of the Western model of life, work and consumption”.

After Snowpiercer was finished, Bong had prepared a 15-page draft script for Parasite , which he left to Han for further research while filming Okja . A multi-month project developed for Han from the multi-day work contract originally proposed by Bong. During this time he interviewed housekeepers, tutors and chauffeurs. He also visited and photographically documented districts of the lower and upper classes around Seoul . Han met with Bong regularly to present his results to him. The renowned filmmaker was so impressed by Han's work that he commissioned him to turn the draft for Parasite into a finished script. Han then produced three different script versions, originally in the belief that Bong would be provided with “a huge library of ideas and details” from which Bong could then develop his own scenario. To Han's surprise, Bong only added the final second part of the film to the script and co-wrote him in the finished script version. While Parasite was in the film award season 2019/20 honored with over 200 awards, including the first time in the history of the Oscars of the prize as Best Picture for a foreign language production, Han received as a screenwriter together with Bong among others also an Oscar, British Academy Film Awards , British Independent Film Award , National Society of Film Critics Award and Writers Guild of America Award as well as a Golden Globe nomination.
