Klagenfurt manuscript

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Klagenfurt manuscript (also Ratschacher manuscript ; common mistranslation: Ratetscher manuscript ; Slov. Celovški rokopis or Rateški rokopis ) is one of the oldest Slovenian manuscripts .

history

Ratschacher Thomaskirche, to which the manuscript is assigned

The manuscript was created between 1362 and 1390 by a vicar of the Maria Gail parish in Ratschach , which at that time belonged to the Maria Gailer parish priest, in a missal from the St. Thomas Church . Similarities with Starogorski rokopis , who is a hundred years younger, suggest a common model. Archaisms suggest that parts of the manuscript were made much older, possibly before the 9th century. When Ratschach was handed over to the Kronau parish in 1390 , the missal probably went to Maria Gail, while the prayers were torn out and remained in Ratschach. The manuscript was discovered in the holdings of the History Association for Carinthia in 1880 and is now kept in the Carinthian State Archives .

content

The manuscript contains an archaic translation of the Our Father , a translation of the Ave Maria , which is located in the 12th century and the translated Creed . The text is written in Gothic minuscule with German orthography.

meaning

The beginning of the written Slovene language is set with the Reformation. Medieval Slovenian language certificates are rare. The Klagenfurt manuscript is considered to be the second oldest Slovenian manuscript after the Freising monuments and is therefore an important monument of Slovenian history.
