history

When families moved to the south of Neukölln in the early 1980s, the Albert Einstein grammar school there no longer offered enough free places. But the capacity of the Leonardo-Da-Vinci-Gymnasium, which was then built , was also exhausted after a renewed increase in the number of students in the early 1990s.

On April 2, 1993, the first plans for a sixth high school on Waltersdorfer Chaussee were made. In 1997 a planning competition was prepared in which 90 participants took part, the winner of which was the group of architects GPG Alten . The construction planning documents were approved in 1998, and construction began on October 1, 1998. The sixth grammar school in Neukölln was founded on February 1, 1999. November 1, 1999 was the topping-out ceremony for the new building. The school building was occupied on September 4, 2000, inaugurated on October 6 and, in implementation of the resolution of the school conference on May 4, 2001, took the name of Hannah Arendt .

This name was chosen from among suggestions submitted by students, teachers and parents. Among the proposals were the names Rahel Varnhagen , Ada Lovelace , Mileva Maric , Ingeborg Bachmann and Else Lasker-Schüler .
