Johann "Hanns" Carl (l) (born January 13, 1587 in Nuremberg ; † June 14, 1665 ibid) was a German engineer , architect , master craftsman and draftsman.

Life

Carl was the son of the builder Peter Carl , from whom he was not trained. He learned the craft of pouring jugs and then worked in the workshop of the sculptor Jakob Wolff . There, Carl mostly dealt with architecture.

Through Wolff's mediation, Carl went to Ulm and became a student of the mathematician Johannes Faulhaber . In addition to mathematics, Carl also learned surveying technology there . Later the Brandenburg Elector Johann Sigismund brought him into his army as a specialist in artillery and fireworks .

Through the mediation of his father, Carl was also employed as a master builder for the city of Nuremberg from 1614. Under the direction of council builder Wolf Jacob Stromer, Carl u. a. together with Jakob Wolff , the son of his teacher, on the construction of the Nuremberg town hall . Carl also worked as a master builder on the imperial castle as on other fortifications in the city of Nuremberg and from 1632–1633 in the expansion of the external works in the city of Regensburg .

Between 1626 and 1631, Carl led the construction of the Evangelical Trinity Church in Regensburg, which was designed according to his plans . In the year of completion, Carl went back to Nuremberg and worked there until the end of his life as an engineer and architect for the Nuremberg Council and as a master craftsman at the Nuremberg armory. In 1633 he also became a member of the Greater Nuremberg City Council.

As with many natural scientists of his time, Carl was particularly interested in astronomy .
