Hanns Fay (born June 24, 1888 in Frankenthal ; † October 28, 1957 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) was a German painter .

Life

Hanns Fay began his artistic work as a whitewater and decorative painter in his hometown Frankenthal.

From 1906 to 1911 he worked as a decorative painter in Berlin . Apart from a brief visit to an imperial court painter, he remained self-taught .

After his marriage he moved to Speyer in 1914 . During this time he was a member of the Association of Palatinate Artists , designed emergency banknotes for the city in 1925 as well as a postage stamp with the Speyer Cathedral and designed wall decorations in public buildings in Speyer and the surrounding area. In 1927 he painted the church in Ramsen .

Plagued by existential fears, Fay hoped for economic improvement when the National Socialists came to power . In 1933 he moved to Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , where he became managing director of the National Socialist successor organization to the Palatinate Art Association . Pictures from that time, such as “working men”, “torch bearers” or “standard bearers”, corresponded entirely to the style of the brown rulers .

Towards the end of his artistic development, Fay's style of painting became more and more independent and free, so that one can speak of “expressive realism”. In his late landscapes and flower still lifes, color compositions were created that are reminiscent of his model Lovis Corinth and are among the best that Palatinate painting of this time has to offer.

Fay lived in Neustadt / W until his death in 1957. at the Haardt . He was buried on October 31, 1957 in the main cemetery in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. His tomb was cleared in 2004 and can no longer be visited.

There were exhibitions of his paintings. a. in Stuttgart , Berlin , Hamburg , Mannheim , Kaiserslautern and Speyer . In Neustadt / W. and Frankenthal each street bears his name.

Because of the rarity of the name form "Hanns", his name is also often spelled "Hans" Fay. He also signed many of his works in this way.

Hanns Fay is the father of the sculptor Hans Bruno Fay (1914–1981).
