Hanns Radau (actually Johannes Conrad Radau ; born March 24, 1901 in Teistimmen , East Prussia ; † December 18, 1960 in Itzehoe ) was a German teacher, writer and sculptor.

Life

In 1906 the family moved to Braunsberg in East Prussia (today's Braniewo ), where he attended elementary school until 1915, from 1915 to 1921 he completed the preparatory institute and the teachers' seminar and passed his first teacher examination. From 1922 he worked as a teacher at the free school in Dinslaken until the school was closed by the National Socialists in 1933. In 1926 Hanns Radau married and in 1931 his first daughter was born. From 1934 to 1940 Hanns Radau worked as a teacher in Rheydt . During this time, the first wooden sculptures were made. From 1940 to 1945 he was employed as a teacher in Gdynia, today's Gdynia . Since 1943 he served as a soldier and in 1945 he was taken prisoner during the retreat to Schleswig-Holstein , from where he was released to Itzehoe in Schleswig-Holstein in the same year. There he worked as a teacher and vice-principal (from 1953) at an elementary school from 1946 to 1960 and resumed his sculptural work (founding member of the Steinburger Künstlerbund in 1945). In 1950 he married for the second time (1951 birth of the second daughter). The years in Itzehoe were marked by intensive work, both professionally and artistically. On December 18, 1960, Hanns Radau died in Itzehoe as a result of a serious illness.

Wood sculptor

Hanns Radau was self-taught. In the years 1934 to 1939 he created a number of works in which he oriented himself towards Ernst Barlach , until he broke away more and more from this type of representation and looked for his own way. The plastic came to the fore more clearly, the "round sculpture", which stands free in the room and is designed from all sides. He turned to abstraction, which is more reminiscent of Henry Moore . Between 1946 and 2001 he had several group exhibitions (Künstlerbund Steinburg; Bund bildender Künstler Schleswig-Holstein; Gruppe 56, of which he was a founding member together with Gottfried Brockmann, Willy Knoop, Curt Stoermer , Gerhart Bettermann , Carl Lambertz and Werner Rieger, among others ) and solo exhibitions .

writer

In addition to his job as a teacher, Radau began writing at an early age. He tried his hand at all literary fields, wrote poetry, plays and radio plays . The radio play "Bob Corner and the Voice of God" won a prize at a competition organized by the Bavarian Radio and was broadcast there and by Radio Vienna . However, Radau was most successful in the area of the genre of youth books , which he tackled late. A total of seven books were published between 1955 and his death in 1960. Two of these works were included in the list of the best for the German Youth Book Prize .

Quite a few of the books have been translated into Dutch, Czech, Portuguese, Spanish, English and Afrikaans, making them known outside of Europe.
