Hanny Thalmann
Hanny Thalmann , Johanna Hermina (born July 26, 1912 in Gossau SG ; † May 11, 2000 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss politician ( CVP ) and one of the first women to be elected to the National Council in 1971 after the introduction of women's suffrage.
Life
Hanny Thalmann was the daughter of Johann, a realteacher, and Hermina nee Senti. After a commercial apprenticeship in Walenstadt , she attended the commercial school in the Menzingen teaching institute , an institution run by Catholic nuns, and studied from 1931–37 at the St. Gallen commercial college . Due to a lung disease, her studies were delayed by several semesters and she had to be given leave of absence from the summer semester of 1932 to the summer semester of 1933. In the winter semester of 1936/37, she was given another leave of absence from her studies, this time for practical reasons: During one year, she used the opportunity to work practically in banking at the Sparkassa's administration, Wil branch. She obtained a trade teacher diploma and, in 1943, was the first woman to receive the title of Dr. oec. (second doctorate at the university). From 1945–74 she worked as a trade teacher at the vocational school for retail trade in St. Gallen and from 1958 as rector. 1950–81 she was a member of the board of directors of the women's headquarters of the canton of St. Gallen and from 1954–88 a member of the cantonal board of the St. Gallen-Appenzell Catholic Women's Association. Through her lectures, Thalmann knew how to interest women in current topics such as women's suffrage.
From 1968 to 1983 she was the first woman to be a member of the Education Council of the Canton of St. Gallen and from November 29, 1971 to November 25, 1979 she was the first woman to be a member of the National Council , where her focus was on educational and social issues. Thalmann helped shape the new Vocational Training Act of 1978 from 1975–78 and was committed to maternity insurance . In the canton she made merits in the professional and advanced training of women.
Hanny Thalmann was single.
