Hans-Christoph Matthes

Hans-Christoph Matthes (born December 15, 1932 in Heideanger ; † June 15, 2016 ) was a German lawyer and judge at the Federal Labor Court .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in 1953, Matthes studied law at the universities of Munich , Kiel and Münster . In 1958 he passed his first state examination in law in Münster. He then completed his legal clerkship in the district of the Hamm Higher Regional Court and passed his second state examination in 1962. He then entered the higher justice service of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and was appointed as a labor judge. After stints at the labor courts in Münster , Wesel , Dortmund and Wuppertal , Matthes was appointed labor court advisor at the labor court in Rheine in 1966 and in 1969 he moved to the labor court in Bochum as such . On January 15, 1074 he was appointed presiding judge at the Hamm Regional Labor Court. On November 28, 1979, Matthes was appointed judge at the Federal Labor Court and initially assigned to the 5th Senate. From 1981 to 1991 he was a member of the 1st Senate, most recently as deputy chairman. From November 1991 until his retirement in December 1997, Matthes was chairman of the 10th Senate of the Federal Labor Court.

During his almost twenty years at the Federal Labor Court, Matthes played a decisive role in shaping the case law of the highest labor court in fundamental judgments on industrial disputes, collective bargaining and works constitution law. In particular, he himself published on collective labor law, labor procedural law and works constitution law. On May 16, 1995, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Kiel .
