Hans-Georg Michalak (born May 17, 1924 ) was a handball and soccer goalkeeper in Magdeburg .

Athletic career

Michalak already had his first sporting success at the age of 18 when he became German field handball champion as a guest player at the Magdeburg Police Sports Club . In 1950 the soccer team of BSG Krupp Gruson Magdeburg (a forerunner of 1. FC Magdeburg ), which was aiming for promotion in the third-class state league Saxony-Anhalt , was looking for a new goalkeeper, as the previous goalkeeper Horst Göbel had left for West Germany. Michalak was persuaded and from then on guarded the goal of the Magdeburg team, who made it into the GDR league with the new goalkeeper in the first season . Michalak played in the GDR league until 1959, took part in all the name changes of his team and became a goalkeeper legend in the city. In 1959, now as the goalkeeper of SC Aufbau Magdeburg, Michalak helped his team to gain promotion for the second time, this time to the top division of GDR football, the Oberliga . He was now 35 years old, but he was still in goal in 14 games in the league. He was then replaced by Wolfgang Blochwitz and ended his sporting career at the end of 1960.
