Hans-Jürgen Butt (born February 26, 1961 in Hamburg ) is a German physicist .

Life

Hans-Jürgen Butt studied physics in Hamburg and Göttingen from 1980 to 1986 . After completing a diploma thesis in high energy physics, he went to Frankfurt am Main at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics in the working group of Ernst Bamberg . In 1989, Hans-Jürgen Butt received his doctorate on the subject of time- resolved measurement of proton transport by bacteriorhodopsin . This was followed by a postdoctoral stay with Paul Hansma in Santa Barbara CA. Hans-Jürgen Butt then worked as a research assistant at the MPI for Biophysics with Ernst Bamberg. After completing his habilitation in biophysical chemistry, he went to the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz as a C3 professor for physical chemistry in 1996 . After another two years as a C4 professor in Siegen , he was appointed director of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz in 2002 .

Hans-Jürgen Butt researches fundamental properties of the structure and dynamics at interfaces. Its aim is to describe processes at interfaces quantitatively as simply as possible or to make them accessible for a description. His main topics are surface forces and wetting. Hans-Jürgen Butt is co-author of more than 380 scientific articles.

Membership and Awards

Hans-Jürgen Butt is honorary professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt and the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . From 2007 to 2011 he was chairman of the Colloid Society . Since 2010 he has been treasurer of the European Colloid and Interface Society. In 2008 he received the ICI distinguished lecturer award from the University of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In 2011 he received the Lectureship Award from the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry, The Chemical Society of Japan . For the development of superamphiphoben surfaces it was in 2013 by the European Research Council awarded (European Research Council, ERC) Advanced Grant a.
