Hans-Jürgen Joseph (born October 28, 1950 in Riesa ) is a German lawyer. From January to June 1990 he was Attorney General of the GDR .

First professional stations

The son of a working-class family completed an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer after attending the POS from 1965 to 1969. He then worked for three years as a people's policeman , most recently as a sergeant in the people's police district in Lübben. After joining the SED in 1970, a four-year study of political science and law at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena followed in 1972 , after which he was a research assistant. From 1981 to 1985 he was public prosecutor with the district attorney Cottbus and with the public prosecutor for the district Cottbus, until 1990 public prosecutor with the attorney general of the GDR (international connections department, west sector) responsible for mutual legal assistance.

Activity as attorney general of the GDR

In January 1990 Hans-Jürgen Joseph succeeded Harri Harland as Attorney General of the GDR. The reason for the replacement was a report by Harland on January 12, 1990 about the previous investigative work, which was assessed by the People's Chamber as completely inadequate and led to demands for disciplinary consequences.

One of Hans-Jürgen Joseph's first official acts was the first - unsuccessful - trial against Erich Honecker for “high treason”: On January 29, 1990, Honecker was arrested and taken to the Berlin-Rummelsburg remand prison. But already on the evening of the following day, January 30, 1990, Honecker was released from custody: The responsible city district court had overturned the arrest warrant and, according to a medical report, confirmed that he was incapable of detention and interrogation.

In March 1990, Hans-Jürgen Joseph ordered Erich Mielke, who had been arrested on December 7, 1989, to be released from pretrial detention for "considerable mental and physical decay" . However, under Joseph's successor, the hospital certified the People's Police in July 1990, and Mielke was imprisoned again.

During Joseph's term of office, the search and arrest (on June 6, 1990) of the former RAF terrorist Susanne Albrecht took place .

At the 14th People's Chamber Conference on June 15, 1990, Jürgen Schmieder complained about the lack of a concept for an "offensive argument with prosecutors charged with charges" and dismissed Joseph as attorney general. He was accused of a lack of competence and a lack of conception in terms of the new social order of the GDR. In July 1990 Günther Seidel became his successor as the last attorney general in the GDR.

Later professional stations

Until August 1990 Joseph was a public prosecutor with the Attorney General, until October 1990 he worked in the legal department of the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR and then until December 1990 he worked in the legal department of the Federal Ministry of the Interior . In 1994 Joseph was admitted to the bar; From January 1995 to November 2011 he was a partner in a law firm in Erkner , since then he has been working as an individual lawyer in Ahrensfelde .
