Initially active in the New Forum during the fall of the Wall, in December 1989 he was one of the founders of the German Forum Party (DFP). In January 1990 he was elected party chairman. After the DFP had joined forces with other liberal parties to form the Bund Free Democrats (BFD) for the Volkskammer elections on March 18, Schmieder ran in constituency 9 (Leipzig district) on the list at number 1 of the electoral alliance. Schmieder moved in as a member of parliament and was elected one of the six deputies of the People's Chamber President. During the Volkskammer election period, the DFP became part of the FDP. Schmieder initially did not go to the Bundestag like 144 members of the Volkskammer. For the federal election on October 16, 1994 , he did not get a place on the list, but only a candidacy as a direct applicant in the constituency of Chemnitz I (323). As expected, he failed with only 2.5% of the first votes.
