Hans-Joachim Daerr

Hans-Joachim Daerr (born December 22, 1943 in Frankenstein in Silesia ) is a German diplomat and was the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Japan from July 1, 2006 to October 21, 2009 .

Life

After completing his Baccalauréat (Abitur) in Paris and a two-year service in the German Navy, he first studied law at the universities of Tübingen, Bonn and Berlin and later studied Japanese studies at the University of Tübingen .

After joining the Foreign Service in 1970, he was employed at the Permanent Mission to the EC in Brussels , at the Consulate General in Osaka - Kobe (from 1973), in the Foreign Office (department for NATO ), at the Embassy in Japan and again in Foreign Affairs Office (planning staff).

From 1986 to 1987 he was head of the “Strategic Issues Task Force” in the Foreign Office. He was then permanent representative of the Ambassador to Nigeria from 1988 to 1991 .

In 1991 Hans-Joachim Daerr returned to the Foreign Office. There he was initially head of the Southern Africa unit before becoming head of subdivision 20 (NATO, WEU , OSCE , CFSP , North America ) in 1995 . As such, he was also Deputy Political Director of the Federal Foreign Office.

From 1998 to 2001 he was ambassador to Pakistan and subsequently the Federal Government Commissioner for questions of disarmament and arms control . He was also a special envoy for Afghanistan .

Before his work as ambassador to Japan, Daerr was Bernd Mützelburg's successor from 2003 to 2006 as head of the GF department (Global Issues: United Nations , Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid ) at the Federal Foreign Office. His last assignment ended in 2009 when he retired.

Hans-Joachim Daerr is a member of the German-Japanese Society Berlin.
