Athletic career
The later successful career of 19-year-old Hans-Joachim Giersch began with a disappointing performance, according to Die neue Fußballwoche , when he played for the injured center forward Georg in the league match between Motor Gera and SG DVP Dresden (0: 4) on March 9, 1952 Buschner was called up. It remained with this one use in the league season 1952/52. Also in the 1952/53 season, coach Oskar Büchner hesitated for a long time before using Giersch in the seventh league game of the Gera company sports community (BSG) again. This time Giersch took his chance, with his fast game on the left attacking side he convinced his coach, who then called him on in another 21 league games. Büchner Giersch used variably in different forward positions, on which he was finally able to score four goals. At the end of the season, the Geraer, who now took up as BSG Bismut, had to relegate from the league. In the GDR league season 1953/54 Giersch had a regular place, but was used in the attack again in different positions. He has been a right runner in the last four league games . He played a total of 23 league games and scored five goals.
In the summer of 1954, a soccer section was founded at the sports club of the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig . It should serve to introduce talented young football players to the national team. In preparation, a screening course was carried out in order to put together an appropriate team. The 21-year-old H.-J. Giersch, who was able to convince and was included in the future squad. The SC DHfK was incorporated into the GDR league seasons 2 and 3 with two teams (I and II) for the 1954/55 season. Giersch was assigned to the DHfK II squad, the team with the young talents, while the national team aspirants were united in the I. team. The project failed after 14 match days due to unsuccessfulness, and both teams were dissolved. Giersch played 13 games (once DHfK I), then he was transferred with a number of teammates to the sports club of the barracked people's police , the upper division ZSK Vorwärts Berlin . Giersch found his way around the now completely rebuilt team and played the remaining twelve league games as the right runner. In the transition round 1955, which was played with 13 games to transition into the calendar year rhythm, Giersch was used again in twelve matches. 1956 Giersch played his last season with Vorwärts Berlin. He was still set as a right runner and played all 15 games in the major league until August 1966.
With the beginning of the 1957 season Giersch played again for BSG Wismut Gera. This was still represented in the 1st GDR league (there was now the third-class 2nd GDR league ). There he was still active until the end of the 1963/64 season (return to the summer-spring season). In these seven seasons, a total of 199 GDR league games were played, of which Giersch was called in 133 games. When he ended his career as a football player in the higher class in the summer of 1964, he could look back on a record of 62 league games with five goals and 169 GDR league games with ten goals.
