Hans-Peter Übleis (born March 21, 1951 in Steyr , Austria ) is an Austro-German publisher and publishing manager. He was the publisher of the Munich publishing group Droemer Knaur , a member of the management board of Holtzbrinck book publishers , chairman of the board of the book and media foundation Literaturhaus Munich and president of the Desert Flower Foundation . In mid-2017 he handed over his role as managing director at Droemer Knaur to his successor Doris Janhsen and has been working as an author and publishing consultant ever since.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Austria, Hans-Peter Übleis studied commercial science at the Vienna University of Economics and Business . After completing his master's degree, he became an assistant at the Institute for Sales Management at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and completed his second degree in law. In 1975 he received his doctorate on the subject of sales policy instruments for multinational companies .

In 1975, Übleis entered the publishing industry, initially as assistant to the publisher Fritz Molden in his publishing house in Vienna. From 1977 he was also managing director of Molden Verlag in Munich and from 1978 publishing director and vice president of Molden inc. In New York. In 1982 he took over the publishing program management at Wilhelm Heyne Verlag , from 1987 as managing director. From 1992 he was also managing director of the cookbook publisher Zabert Sandmann. In the 15 years at Heyne, he systematically built up the hardcover business. His authors included u. a. Stephen King , John Grisham , Thomas Harris and Eckart Witzigmann . In 1998 he first became the publisher of the Weltbild publishing group and managing director of the Schneekluth Verlag, then moved to the management of the Droemer Knaur publishing group, where he took on the position of publisher and program management. He expanded the publisher's program and made it the market leader in suspense, historical novels and biographies. Thanks to his sustained support for German and international authors, authors such as Sebastian Fitzek , Volker Klüpfel / Michael Kobr , Iny Lorentz , Sabine Ebert , Nina George , Karen Rose , Val McDermid , John Katzenbach and Don Winslow were able to establish themselves at the top of the bestseller lists.

Hans-Peter Übleis has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Book and Media Foundation Literaturhaus Munich since 2015. Since 2016 he has been a member of the management of Holtzbrinck Buchverlage , a subsidiary of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group .

Übleis is also President of the Desert Flower Foundation. The aim of the foundation is the global fight against female genital mutilation and education for African children.
