Hans-Wolfgang Strätz (born November 1, 1939 in Miesbach ) is a German legal scholar , legal historian and emeritus professor of legal history , civil law and canon law at the University of Konstanz .

Hans-Wolfgang Strätz studied law at the Universities of Munich and Würzburg , passed both state examinations in 1962 and 1966 and received his doctorate in both rights (Dr. iur. Utr.) In 1965 with Paul Mikat in Würzburg with a thesis on the late ancient church constitution . At that time he was in charge of the archives of the former German student body and the former National Socialist German Student Union at the University Library of Würzburg and, using the source material available to him, developed a first source-based treatise on the book burnings of May 1933 that is still central today .
