Hans Bechtler

Hans Carl Bechtler (born February 14, 1904 in Allahabad , † September 16, 1998 in Zurich , reformed , resident in St. Gallen and Zurich) was a Swiss entrepreneur and art collector .

Life

Hans Carl Bechtler was born on February 14, 1904 in Allahabad as the son of the businessman Carl Joachim Bechtler and Anna, née Sutter. After attending the Trogen Cantonal School , Hans Bechtler began studying electrical engineering at ETH Zurich in 1922 , which he completed in 1926 with a federal diploma . With a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation , he was recommended as the first Swiss student and graduate from ETH to come to America in 1927 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge , where he completed the Graduate Program in 1928 with an additional Master of Science degree . In addition, he took courses in corporate finance at Harvard Business School , with the opportunity to develop new types of electrical calculating machines. Afterwards, Hans Carl Bechtler worked as an engineer and refrigeration specialist for refrigeration and air conditioning systems in the USA for numerous companies before he worked in Paris between 1930 and 1933 .

After returning to Switzerland in 1933, Hans Carl Bechtler and his brother Walter Bechtler initially founded the "Ingenieur HC Bechtler & Co." in Zurich, and in 1935 Luwa AG, which specializes in ventilation and heating technology. Hans Carl Bechtler was President of the Board of Directors of Luwa AG from 1935 to 1980. In addition to specializing in ventilation, cooling and heating technology as well as calculating machines, he was also interested in textile sciences.

In 1948 Hans Carl Bechtler invented a spinning machine that can be used as a textile testing machine for faulty fabrics and acquired the patent for the USA, Belgium, Germany, France, England and the Netherlands.

From 1969 onwards, Hans Carl Bechtler was President of Hesta AG as well as continuously operating as President of the Board of Directors from 1953 to 1980. Hans Carl Bechtler was also operationally active from 1953 to 1985 at "Zellweger Uster AG" , and from 1960 as president. From 1962 to 1976 he was operationally active at Georg Fischer AG , in 1969 as Vice President as well as at Maschinenfabrik Rieter and the Swiss Bank Corporation .

In addition, Hans Carl Bechtler was an important promoter and collector of contemporary art in the spectrum of all art media from painting, sculptures, drawings, photographs and installations by established but also still unknown artists. From 1960 to 1975 he was President of the Collection Commission and Vice President of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft as well as initiator of the Alberto Giacometti Foundation, established in 1965, and was its President from 1965 to 1990.

In 1934 Hans Carl Bechtler married Elisabetha Bertha Staub, the daughter of the doctor Paul Staub and niece of the founder of Hesta AG Jakob Heusser . Hans Carl Bechtler-Staub died on September 16, 1998 at the age of 94 in Zurich.
