Hans Becker (geographer)

Hans Becker (born March 31, 1936 in Halberstadt ; † February 23, 2017 in Erlangen ) was a German geographer .

Life

After a trimester of dentistry in 1954 in Halle, Hans Becker studied geography , biology and geology in Cologne from 1955 . There he received his doctorate in geography in 1962 and completed his habilitation in 1971. From 1972 he was scientific advisor and lecturer in geography at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . From 1976 until his retirement in 2002 he held the chair for geography at the University of Bamberg . He was appointed as the first professor there for cultural geography .

In 1989 he was a guest at the University of Tirana - he remained closely connected with Albania throughout his life. He was also responsible for the close collaboration between the Geographical Institute in Bamberg and colleagues in Tirana.

Becker was a co-founder and long-time managing director of the Institute for Development Research in Rural Areas Upper and Middle Franconia (eV), a practice-oriented regional research institution. He was chairman of the board of trustees of the Otto Meyer and Elisabeth Roth Foundation .
