Hans Eisenring (born June 17, 1932 from Jonschwil and Rorschach ; † January 18, 2020 ) was a Swiss engineer and former President of the General Management of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).

Life

Eisenring had the lawyer Theodor Eisenring as his father, who was politically active in his home community and as a city councilor in Rorschach , then in the canton of St. Gallen and finally as a national councilor from 1947 to 1961 at the federal level in Bern. Son Hans Eisenring grew up in Rorschach and attended primary and secondary school there. He then completed the cantonal school at Burggraben in St. Gallen and graduated with a high school diploma in natural sciences. This was followed by studying mechanical engineering at the ETH Zurich . He then worked for Walter Daenzer for four years at the Business Administration Institute of the ETHZ (BWI). During this time he was able to hold several advisory mandates for the BWI abroad. He also got to know Nicolas Hayek . A friendship later developed from this. In 1962 he became the personal assistant and designated successor to the owner of Flug- und Fahrzeugwerke Altenrhein (FFA). There he came into contact with the railroad for the first time, because FFA manufactured railroad cars. In 1968 he took over the operational management of the FFA. Federal Councilor Kurt Furgler and Federal Chancellor Huber asked him to apply for a vacant position on the SBB Board of Directors. After his application, the Federal Council elected him in 1982 as a member of the SBB General Management for the Infrastructure and Technology Department . His first task was to introduce the Zurich S-Bahn with double-decker cars, which started operating in 1990. In April 1990, Eisenring was appointed President of the SBB General Management. In the remaining two years before his early retirement for health reasons, he continued to do essentials for the Bahn 2000 project . He was particularly committed to the new Locomotive 2000 (RE 460).

In addition to his work for SBB, he was a member of the board of directors of Swissair and Eurofima and, after his retirement, for the travel company Kuoni and Hartchrom in Steinach SG . Daimler-Benz elected him to the supervisory board as an advisor to the executive board.

He left behind his wife and two sons.
