Hans Finsterer (born June 24, 1877 in Weng im Innkreis , † November 4, 1955 in Vienna ) was an Austrian surgeon .

biography

Hans Finsterer was Wenger's son, a small farmer. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1902.

Finsterer specialized in the field of surgery, among other things he worked as an assistant doctor in Graz (1907–1909 with Viktor Hacker), Klagenfurt and Vienna (1910–1914 with Dr. Julius Hochenegg ). In 1913 Finsterer became a private lecturer in surgery, and from 1914 to 1919 he did military service.

In 1920 Finsterer became associate professor for surgery at the University of Vienna, and in 1947 there o. Professor for surgery. Between 1935 and 1951 he was the head of the surgical department at the Vienna General Hospital.

Finsterer performed around 20,000 operations, including over 10,000 gastric operations.

Finsterer left behind many publications on almost all areas of surgery (especially gastric surgery and anesthesia, the Biographical Lexicon of Upper Austria lists 272 articles and treatises by Finsterer). He developed new surgical methods that are internationally recognized (Finsterer-Drüner operation, Hofmeister -insterer operation and the description of the Finsterer symbol). A special feature was that he performed numerous gastric and intestinal operations only under local anesthesia.

Finsterer received numerous awards and honorary memberships in scientific associations. Among other things, he received the title Master of Surgery in 1949, the highest - and rarely awarded - award of the International College of Surgeons (in Chicago, USA).

Hans Finsterer, who was awarded the citizenship certificate of the City of Vienna in 1947 , was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 33h, row 2, grave number 1a). In 1975 the Finsterergasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him. In the market town of Aspach (Upper Austria) , the Dr.-Finsterer-Weg also reminds of the great surgeon.

In 1951 he was made an honorary citizen of his home community of Weng im Innkreis. Hans Finsterer pays tribute to his home community with a memorial on the community square, which was created by the sculptor Ilse Pompe-Niederführ and unveiled in 1966.
