After graduating from high school and doing practical work in the electrical industry, Hans Frühauf studied from 1924 to 1928 at what was then the Technical University of Stuttgart . He then worked there as a research assistant and lecturer. In 1931 he became a Dr.-Ing. With a thesis on "the application possibilities of the Dynatron in high-frequency measurement technology" . PhD. 1933–1938 he was laboratory manager at SABA in Villingen and then until 1945 technical director of Graetz - Radio AG in Berlin. In 1933 he joined the NSDAP .

After the end of the Second World War, Frühauf was chief engineer and deputy head of VEB Stern-Radio Rochlitz from 1945 to 1948 . 1948–1950 he was scientific director and technical director of VVB RFT Nachrichten- und Meßtechnik Leipzig.

In 1950, Frühauf was appointed to the chair for low-voltage technology at the Dresden University of Technology ; at the same time he became director of the Institute for High Frequency Technology. In 1953 he was elected a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . During this time at the academy, from 1962 to 1970, he also worked closely with Ulrich Hofmann , who later became Vice President and 1st Vice President (1970 to 1990) of the Academy.

In 1957 he was a founding member of the Research Council of the GDR . As State Secretary for Research and Technology, he was a member of the GDR Council of Ministers from 1961 to 1962 .

His contributions to the theory of high-frequency filter circuits, information transmission and the modulation and application of electron tubes have received international attention .

In 1951, Frühauf received the National Prize of the GDR, 2nd class and in 1961, 1st class for science and technology "for his scientific work in all areas of communications technology, in particular for the development and application of high-frequency technology". In 1954 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1984 he received the bar of honor from the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. He was an honorary doctor of the Technical University of Ilmenau . Frühauf died in Dresden in 1991 and was buried in the Heidefriedhof .
