Bastian study
It is a long-term study that examines the development of children in elementary schools with more music lessons compared to children in schools with regular music lessons. From 1992 to 98, the pupils of seven primary schools in Berlin were examined. One compared here students with increased music lessons with students with regular music lessons. Social behavior , intelligence quotient and ability to concentrate were examined before, during and after the completion of the respective lesson segment. The results show that the development of the children with increased music lessons at the beginning of the lesson phase initially largely paralleled the control group. The longer the children had intensified music lessons, the more significant the developmental differences in the following personality traits became:
Towards the end of the study period, a measurable increase in the intelligence quotient compared to the control group was found in the children in the classes with more intensive music lessons. This applied both to children who had an above-average IQ before the study period and to those who had an average or below-average IQ. In general, the IQ scores were more homogeneously distributed in the music classes at the end. H. the peak values, both upwards and downwards, stood out less from the average than in the control group.
criticism
As part of the professional discourse, z. Sometimes violent criticism of the study. This applies above all to the methodological system as well as the interpretation and presentation of the results and, last but not least, fundamentally questions the supposedly found results. On the other hand, the "music makes you smart" motto was played so high that even Bastian was surprised. After 2007, he wrote a reply to the BMBF's expertise drawn up by psychologists, which was intended to clarify the original intentions and to clean up piled up judgments.
