Hans H. Luik (born March 20, 1961 in Tartu ) is an Estonian media entrepreneur , journalist and political publicist .

Life

Hans H. Luik was born in 1961 as the son of the Estonian writer and translator Hans Luik (1927–2017). He graduated from Tartu State University in 1984 with a degree in journalism and the Moscow Theater Critic Seminar in 1986 .

From 1985 to 1987 Hans H. Luik was employed at the theater in Rakvere and from 1985 to 1989 he worked for the Estonian magazine Kultuur ja Elu . When the Estonian SSR reformed in the late 1980s under the sign of glasnost and perestroika , Luik founded the liberal Independent Youth Forum ( Sõltumatu Noortefoorum ) in 1988 .

Press empire

With the recovery of Estonian independence looming, Hans H. Luik became one of the leading media entrepreneurs in Estonia . Together with the later Estonian politician Rein Lang , he founded the first politically independent radio station after the Second World War , Kuku Raadio , in 1992 .

From 1989 to 1991 Luik was editor-in-chief and from 1991 co-owner of the first independent political weekly newspaper Eesti Ekspress . With the great success of Eesti Ekspress, Hans H. Luik has continuously expanded his position as a leading private media entrepreneur in Estonia.

Eesti Ekspress is now the flagship of AS Eesti Ekspress Grupp , of which Luik is co-owner. The group also includes the national daily Eesti Päevaleht , the country's largest tabloid , Õhtuleht , the rural weekly Maaleht , a book publisher, the digital photo archive Pressifoto , the free newspaper Linnaleht , which appears in Estonian and Russian , and the Rahva bookstore chain Raamat . Luik is the majority owner of the news portal Delfi .

In addition, Hans H. Luik has appeared as a writer since the 1980s. His dramas include Tuled sa tagasi (1982), Mul on külm (1984) and Seitsmepäine haldjas (1986). He wrote the scripts for the films Surmatants (1989) and Kuldrannake (1991).

Private life

Hans H. Luik is married to the Estonian Selle Luik. The couple now live separately.
