from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Jacob Spiegler (* between 1570 and 1580 in Buchhorn an der Bilz (now part of Michelbach an der Bilz ); † before 1658 probably in Stuttgart ; documented between 1603 and 1629 ) was a Württemberg painter who was in the service of the dukes .

Life

Spiegler was a patrician son . Little is known about his life. Between the years 1603 and 1629 he repeatedly received orders from the dukes of Württemberg. His work in connection with the construction of the city church in Freudenstadt is best documented.

He painted (probably 1608-1609, together with Georg Donauer ) the organ built by Conrad Schott for the Freudenstadt church (and destroyed by an aerial bomb in 1945) with "beautiful histories and all sorts of musical pictures". “The wing paintings depicted Jacob's dream and Christ's transfiguration on the outside , Judith and Holofernes and the apocalyptic woman on the inside . On the organ foot could be seen David with the harp, Samson , who 'played the Requiem and the death song for himself in the Philistine house', and Miriam's hymn of praise with the Israelite women. "

The two painters of the organ were recommended by Conrad Schott himself and worked on it with a total of nine assistants. The reward of 738 fl seems to have been very high at first glance, but it included not only the colors, but also the precious materials such as silver and gold, which were used to decorate numerous elements.

But Spiegler also worked at the ducal court. From 1612/13 he painted portraits of the duke and his brothers, but all of them are buried.
