The Hans Kilian and Lotte Köhler Center (KKC) for social and cultural psychology and historical anthropology is a social science research center founded in August 2014 at the Chair of Social Theory and Social Psychology in the Faculty of Social Science at the Ruhr University Bochum . The KKC is funded by the Köhler Foundation in the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft .

In the spirit of its namesake (see below), the KKC is dedicated to tasks in the field of interdisciplinary and internationally oriented psychology and psychoanalysis . The exchange with neighboring disciplines such as sociology , ethnology , history and anthropology , education and philosophy is important. Engagement in interdisciplinary and international research areas such as critical psychology , cultural and postcolonial studies , gender and religious studies is just as important .

Naming

The research facility is named after two personalities whose biographies are closely related:

  • Hans Kilian (1921–2008) was Professor of Social Psychology and Applied Psychoanalysis from 1971 to 1984 at the University of Kassel . His special research interests were in psychosomatics, cultural revolutionary anthropology and the interdisciplinary analysis of psychohistorical and psychosocial developments.
  • Lotte Köhler (* 1925) received her psychoanalytic training in Munich and Zurich. She is particularly interested in human self and memory development in early childhood. Her entrepreneurial activity, which she began in the 1950s, ended in 1987 with the establishment of the Köhler Foundation for the Promotion of Human Sciences in the Stifterverband.

Scientific activities

The center is the result of an institutional development that began with the establishment of the Hans Kilian Prize for outstanding research personalities, which was awarded for the first time in 2011 , and has since led to further scientific activities. These include in particular the

  • Award of the Hans Kilian Prize (winners 2011: Hartmut Böhme ; 2013: Hans Joas ; 2015: Jessica Benjamin ; 2017: Jaan Valsiner ; 2019: Ashis Nandy )
  • Conducting international Hans Kilian lectures on social and cultural psychology and integrative anthropology
  • Conducting relevant scientific symposia and workshops
  • Awarding of short-term fellowships to intensify national and international cooperation
  • Supervision of a student college for scientific exchange among the Germany scholarship holders, which the Köhler Foundation supports annually at the Ruhr University Bochum
  • Publication of the collected writings of Hans Kilian
  • Administration of Hans Kilian's written estate and Lotte Köhler's scientific work in the Kilian Köhler archive
