Hans Kilian (born April 25, 1921 in Barmen ; † March 30, 2008 in Munich ) was a German physician, psychoanalyst and professor of social psychology and applied psychoanalysis.

Life

Hans Kilian was born the son of a journalist and a piano teacher. The father, then a political editor at the Essener Allgemeine Zeitung, was banned from working in 1933, whereupon the family became impoverished. Kilian studied medicine, initially in Munich , where he was associated with the White Rose resistance group . ( Christoph Probst was a close friend.). He did military service until 1945 before finally graduating in Paris . He went back to Germany and earned a living for himself and his parents as the author of radio programs on Bayerischer Rundfunk under Gerhard Szczesny . In 1969 and 1979 Kilian still organized series there on social-psychological topics.

In 1953 he received his doctorate at the psychosomatic polyclinic of the University of Munich, of which he became director in 1960. In 1970 he received his habilitation at the Technical University of Darmstadt , briefly taught at the University of Göttingen before he was full professor of social psychology and applied psychoanalysis at the newly founded University of Kassel from 1971 to 1984 . There he campaigned for the establishment of psychoanalysis in various courses of study (especially in teacher training, social psychology and social work ).

In 1979 Kilian was appointed managing director of the Scientific Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy and Psychosocial Hygiene , which he co-founded . The aim of this center was to examine the psychological development of humans in a social and cultural context. However, given the prevailing academic zeitgeist, this interdisciplinary concern was faced with a number of difficulties, which contributed to Kilian's early retirement in 1984. On August 26, 1961, Kilian was one of the founding members of the Humanist Union .

Under the title Psychogram of Events , Kilian organized psychoanalytically oriented television interviews with political journalists and other celebrities, including Rainer Werner Fassbinder , Uli Hoeneß , Gerd Bucerius , Bishop Kurt Scharf , at the end of 1972, 1973 and 1974 in cooperation with the documentary filmmaker Bernd Dost . Peter Merseburger and Peter von Siemens . Together with Bernd Dost, he also made the films parlor game in 1973 . A group dynamic experiment and eros and politics .

Hans Kilian's partner was the psychoanalyst Lotte Köhler , founder of the Hans Kilian Prize and initiator of the Hans Kilian and Lotte Köhler Center (KKC) at the Ruhr University in Bochum.

Work and meaning

Kilian worked until the end of his life on his interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary theory of metacultural humanization, networking terms and models from the natural sciences with findings from the social and cultural sciences, in particular psychology and psychoanalysis , sociology , social and cultural anthropology and the humanities .

Kilian's “dialectical anthropology” sees itself as the link between psychoanalysis and critical social theory. Kilian makes the limits of a historically unconscious psychoanalysis clear, which equates the structure of the bourgeois individual with the nature of man and in this way has to fail in the face of the collective identity crisis of the late bourgeois culture. The first part of this approach was published in the book The Expropriated Consciousness . In it, the author depicts the “middle section” of the unconscious structures of human self-control as a central location of historical change in the present.

Most of his later scholarly texts, including the book manuscript, Value Consciousness and History, financed by the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Foundation and completed in 1985 . Attempts to locate the present from the perspective of a historical theory of evolution have not yet been published. The documentation of the scientific legacy of Hans Kilian and the publication of his collected writings is carried out by the Kilian Köhler Archive in the Hans Kilian and Lotte Köhler Center (KKC).

From 2011 to 2019, the Köhler Foundation awarded the Hans Kilian Prize for research into and promotion of metacultural humanization .
