life and work

Jessica Benjamin grew up in America as a child of Jewish immigrants. In 1967 she began studying social sciences with Theodor W. Adorno at the University of Frankfurt am Main , which she completed in 1978 in New York with a doctorate. Then she began training as a psychoanalyst.

Jessica Benjamin practices as a psychoanalyst in New York City and teaches in the Postdoctoral Psychology Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy at New York University . As a co-founder of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies in New York, she is considered one of the most important theorists of relational psychoanalysis .

One focus of her work is the re-establishment of psychoanalysis on an intersubjective basis. In her early work she sat a. a. deals with feminism and the genesis of patriarchal power structures in early childhood . Starting from critical theory , it combines Hegel's idea of the struggle for recognition with the psychoanalytic theory concept. ( The Bonds of Love , 1988). In more recent work, she deals with the topic of the intersubjective analytical third , concentrating above all on the cognitive process and the recognition of trauma .

It revises classical psychoanalysis and its core theorem of the Oedipus complex : It is not the father first who constitutes a third position that enables triangulation; Rather, as a community in the third, this is an intersubjective product of the early mother-child symbiosis. The orthodox understanding of Oedipus, in which the mother is only granted object status, is in fact a forcing of the defense mechanism of identification with the aggressor , the consequence of which is, among other things. a. the non-recognition of female subjectivity in gender relations.

She brings her insights to bear in various workshops, including a. with the aim of initiating a process of mutual recognition between Palestinians and Israelis who work in the health sector.

In May 2008 she was in Vienna at the invitation of the Sigmund Freud Foundation and gave the traditional Sigmund Freud lecture there .

In April 2015 she received the Hans Kilian Prize for research into and promotion of metacultural humanization . The award recognizes her scientific life's work, which unites “professional and national scientific cultures”, and her “decisive contribution [...] to the development of a relational, intersubjective theory of the self”. The laudation was given by Werner Bohleber , who emphasized her “impressive project of a psychoanalytic theory of recognition”.
