Hans Münch (conductor)

Hans Münch (born March 9, 1893 in Mülhausen , Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine , † September 7, 1983 in Binningen ) was a Swiss conductor .

Life

Hans Münch came on March 9, 1893 as the son of Eugen Münch and Margarethe Caroline Wilhelmine, née. Beckenhaupt, born in Mulhouse. His father's brother was Ernst Münch , an organist and choirmaster from Alsace . So his son, the conductor Charles Münch , was Hans Münch's cousin.

From 1912 Münch studied piano, organ, violoncello and composition at the Basel Conservatory . Six years later he became a teacher at the conservatory himself, teaching piano and choir singing there. In 1921 he married Valerie Hausmann.

From 1935 to 1947, Hans Münch took over the position of director at the conservatory and music school. As the successor to Hermann Suter , he was conductor of the Basler Gesangverein and the Basler Liedertafel. In 1935 he took over the direction of the concerts of the Allgemeine Musikgesellschaft from Felix Weingartner , and in 1939 he became Dr. hc from the University of Basel . In addition to his work as a conductor, Hans Münch composed a number of pieces, especially large choral and orchestral works.
