from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes "Hans" Michaelson (born November 17, 1872 in Hettstedt (near Halle an der Saale ); died 1954 / July 15, 1955 / July 15, 1959 in Guayaquil ) was a German painter .

Life

Hans Michaelson was probably born in Hettstedt on November 17, 1872, the son of the Jewish merchants Franz (born 1840) and Isa (born approx. 1850, née Behrens) Michaelson . He had two younger siblings, Elsbeth (born 1876) and Paul (born 1879).

After studying with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte in Munich , he continued his artistic training at the Berlin Art Academy until 1908/1909 .

On April 23, 1910 he married the painter Else Henriette Angerstein (born April 10, 1881 in Berlin ; † June 17, 1976 in Guayaquil ).

In 1914 he exhibited in Paul Cassirer's art salon . From 1916 to 1917 Michaelson participated in three exhibitions at the Berlin Secession . He was also a guest of the November group . In 1927 he co-founded the artist group Die Sieben . According to the art critic Juan Castro y Velásquez, his style at that time is attributed to Fauvism and Impressionism .

During the seizure action " Degenerate Art " of the Nazis in 1937 and Michaelson's paintings chorus confiscated from the Berlin city possession.

On October 15, 1939, Michaelson emigrated to Ecuador because of his Jewish origins to protect against racist persecution by the National Socialists . The emigration succeeded with the help of the son of the Ecuadorian ambassador in Berlin, Miguel Angel de Ycaza Gomez - he was Hans Michaelson's student. Hans arrived in Ecuador in 1940 with his wife Else. Shortly after the Michaelsons escaped, the Gestapo broke into the apartment at 25 Charlottenburger Ufer in Berlin and confiscated the couple's property. Only a few pieces of jewelry could be brought to safety from the Gestapo as they were hidden in small hollowed out plaster sculptures that were made for this purpose. A few smaller paintings and drawings were also brought to safety by Miguel Angel de Ycaza Gomez; they were later found in Ecuador.

In Guayaquil he teaches at the art school, the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Guayaquil . Here u. a. Araceli Gilbert , Enrique Tábara and Theo Constante among his students. The date of his death is unclear, but he certainly died in Guayaquil and was buried there.

Today it is the subject of research on the Lost Generation .
